The Borough Council is working with an innovative designer on an interim venue to be used to generate awareness of a local Newcastle-under-Lyme hero Philip Astley and celebrate his life and contribution to the modern day circus. The centre is intended to appeal to everyone, from young children to older adults. It will be used by the general public, school groups, community groups and for education and outreach. The centre will display permanent exhibits relating to Philip Astley, his contribution to circus and also celebrate the wider circus landscape. It will display various temporary exhibits over the year, which may include performance elements. It will be a multi use centre, accommodating educational talks, screenings, outreach programmes and be available for other uses generating income for the Borough Council. The venue identified for the interim use is 23-25 Merrial Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme, ST5 2AD which is currently a dilapidated property. Refurbishment of this property has commenced by other parties. This will enable the themed fit-out to follow. The successful bidder will have full access to all refurbishment drawings. They will be able to liaise with the refurbishment design team and contractor during the refurbishment period.
