UK wide update of the sensitivity evidence base for marine habitats - The project aims to update the sensitivity evidence base for UK marine habitats and species. The current evidence base was developed by the MarLIN programme between 1999 and 2005 and is hosted by the MarLIN website. It remains the largest, most comprehensive review of the effects of human activities and natural events on the marine life of the UK. The MarLIN sensitivity database and website is a very well-known among the marine community, and still widely used, reporting in excess of one million website hits a year from over 200 countries. Marine habitat and species sensitivity assessments provide the scientific basis of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Environmental Statements (ES), statutory conservation advice (advice on operations), management planning and decision making, Habitat Regulations assessments, wide-scale condition assessment and many other outputs. In addition to enabling the SNCBs to deliver their statutory duties, the sensitivity assessments are also used by local governments, universities and colleges, research institutes, environmental consultancies, NGOs, the Natural History Museum, and numerous private individuals and amateur naturalists.

Provision of Development of the IPI specimen archive - The Contractor aims to establish an insect biodiversity archive to preserve 50,000 specimens collected during research funded under the UK Insect Pollinators initiative (IPI), and make these available for future research. Based on PI estimates of the proportions of each IPI grant budget spent on collection, preparation, identification, and data entry, the Contractor estimates the value of the IPI specimens to be £3 million, 30% of the IPI budget. The proposed archive would represent a unique internationally significant resource for research into insect biodiversity, and pollinators specifically, and provide highly-resolved baseline sampling for tracking of changes in populations and diversity through time. Preserving this one-off resource requires that we move quickly to minimise degradation of the dry-pinned specimens that make up most of the archive material – both through dissipation of specimens due to lack of appropriate storage space, and degradation of key biological molecules (such as DNA and pesticide residues). The archive specimens will be cryopreserved at - 80°C and managed in perpetuity by the Natural History Museum, London (NHM), who will provide equipment and ongoing costs. This proposal will therefore help to secure the legacy of the IPI and maximise future research and policy impact.

Study to assess the social and cultural values of pollinators - Government recognises that pollinators have an intrinsic cultural, aesthetic and social value that is appreciated by the public. This project aims to enhance understanding and improve the way in which these values are taken into account in policy development, decision making and evaluation at a variety of spatial scales, as well as informing future discussions on the case for government or private investment. The project will present the available evidence in an accessible form, developing case studies and tools/methods to support decision making. It will be flexible and adaptable to different contexts, so that it can inform communication with public and other audiences (e.g. on Bees' Needs advice)
