The lighthouse was established in 1886 to mark the west side of the main entrance into the Clyde. Designed by David Alan Stevenson and constructed by Hill and Son of Leith, the painted white stone tower stands 11 metres high at an elevation of 18 metres above sea level. The existing optic has a range of 17 nautical miles with a flashing white character (1) every 4 seconds. The Lighthouse station consists of a tower, engine room, control room, battery room, store room and domestic accommodation. The former lightkeeper's houses and all other buildings are privately owned. The main items of project work are as listed below:- 1.Carry out a full Asbestos Refurbishment / Demolition Survey on all NLB operational buildings prior to the commencement of any work. The survey, sample collection and sample analysis must be carried by a UKAS accredited contractor in accordance with ISO 17020, ISO 17025 and Health and Safety Executive Guidance Notes; HSG 248, Asbestos: The analysts' guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures" and HSG264, Asbestos: The survey guide. 2.The Principal Contractor is expected to test the existing 'HCL' fall arrest system and re-certify it if necessary before use. The Principal Contractor is to provide the Project Leader with all relevant test certification for record and audit purposes. 3.Deliver all plant, tools, materials, etc to NLB Oban packaged for helicopter under-slinging. 4.Land plant, tools, materials, etc on site and establish welfare facilities. 5.Carry out minor civil works and full redecoration of the lighthouse station. The light has a white flashing character (3) every 30 seconds giving a nautical range of 17 miles. The only property the NLB currently own on the Island is the lighthouse tower, the smaller tower below, the link corridor building between both towers, and the solar panel structure. All remaining buildings and land are privately owned. Due to the location of this site, the majority of materials and equipment will be transported to and from site via NLB Tender & Helicopter.
